Identify three or more specific descriptions or details about Winston's home at Victory Mansions Apartments as presented in Chapter 1 of the novel. For each detail, explain the mood or atmosphere created for the reader.
"The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats."-establishes a dreary and gloomy mood
"...the world looked cold. Down in the street little eddies of wind were whirling dust and torn paper into spirals, and though the sun was shining and the sky a harsh blue, there seemed to be no color in anythng."-alson contributes to the dull mood
"Vistas of rotting nineteenth-century houses..."-the area is dilapidated and run down
How does this setting affect Winston psychologically?
He shares the gloomy mood with the world around him. Its easy to see that he is unhappy. As he looks out of his window, he wonders if it has always looked so rundown. Everything is daark and his surroundings and situation make him dislike the world that he lives in.
