Reflection of Totalitarian Government

1)Could a totalitarian society exist in this country? Why or why not?
A) No, because its more like a one sided government and in our country we have two parties.

A) Yes, because its like a one dimensional society and rely and someone else to make decisions.

3) Is a totalitarian society with no crime or poverty better than a free society plagued with crime and poverty?
A) I believe a two party society with crime, poverty, and freedom is better than a totalitarian society with no crime and poverty but being controlled.

Winston's Work Environment

Identify three or more specific descriptions or details about Winston's work environment at the Ministry of Truth as presented in Chapter 2-3 of the novel. For each detail, explain the mood or atmosphere created for the reader.

”… looked grim as the loopholes of a fortress. His heart quailed before the enormous pyramidal shape. It was too strong, it could not be stormed. A thousand rocket bombs would not batter it down.”

This means that the Ministry of Truth was virtually indestructable because the people of Oceania were so brainwashed that they had no idea what was actually going on.

“He was a fattish but active man of paralysing stupidity, a mass of imbecile enthusiasms -- one of those completely unquestioning, devoted drudges on whom, more even than on the Thought Police, the stability of the Party depended”

This says that in their society if you go along with what they tell you to do you can have a good job but not necessarily be qualified for it.

“It was nought seven fifteen, getting-up time for office workers. Winston wrenched his body out of bed -- naked, for a member of the Outer Party received only 3,000 clothing coupons annually, and a suit of pajamas was 600 -- and seized a dingy singlet and a pair of shorts that were lying across a chair.”

This shows how much control they had over the people of Oceania. They were given a certain amount for clothes and had to wake up when they were told.

How does Winston's work and work environment affect him?

He knows that something is wrong with how things are but feels helpless because there's nothing he can do about it. He is scared of what they will do to him if he does try and stand up for himself and the others of Oceania.

"Amazon Erases Orwell Books from Kindle Devices"- Reflection

Yes, I believe that it is unacceptable to take back the book from paying customers. However, they could have discontinued the book and that would have been perfectly fine. It's not right that they took the book back just because they had the power to.

Party Slogans

What do you think they mean?

"Big Brother is watching you."

This means that a higher authority is watching them.

"WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH."

This means that the sruggles they go through unite the people of Oceania, no individual can succeed on their own, and the fact that they dont understand whats going on helps them.

"Who controls the past controls the future:who controls the present controls the past."

This means that control of the past ensures control of the future and control of the present ensures that you can change from what happened in the past.

Winton's Home

Identify three or more specific descriptions or details about Winston's home at Victory Mansions Apartments as presented in Chapter 1 of the novel. For each detail, explain the mood or atmosphere created for the reader.

"The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats."-establishes a dreary and gloomy mood

"...the world looked cold. Down in the street little eddies of wind were whirling dust and torn paper into spirals, and though the sun was shining and the sky a harsh blue, there seemed to be no color in anythng."-alson contributes to the dull mood

"Vistas of rotting nineteenth-century houses..."-the area is dilapidated and run down

How does this setting affect Winston psychologically?

He shares the gloomy mood with the world around him. Its easy to see that he is unhappy. As he looks out of his window, he wonders if it has always looked so rundown. Everything is daark and his surroundings and situation make him dislike the world that he lives in.
